Steroids and It’s Side Effects
Steroids are synthetically developed hormones which were originally created to fight various diseases.
There are two types of Steroids :
1 – Anabolic Steroids
These are the most commonly used steroids. They behave like Male Sex Hormones. Medically this type of Steroid is prescribed by doctors to counter problems related to Sex and diseases like Cancer and AIDS. Many Athletes have been caught Red Handed using these Steroids to increase their Physical Standards and win competitions.
2 – Corticosteroids
These are the types that are actually being used for medical reasons, hence they are far less controversial than their Anabolic counterpart. Doctors prescribe them to cure Allergic reactions and autoimmune diseases.
- Cortisone is common example of Corticosteroids which are used to treat the pain and swelling caused by insect bites.
- Prednisone is another which is used in treatment of Lupus and Arthritis.
Both Anabolic and Corticosteroids can be taken orally or directly injected into the veins.
Let’s talk about the use of Steroids in Bodybuilding.
During Workouts we tend to break our muscle tissues. When these broken tissues heal, they regrow bigger and stronger than the original tissues. And when this process is repeated over a long period of time gives huge and strong muscles, which is the main idea behind Bodybuilding.
The male sex hormone, Testosterone helps in the process of muscle growth. Now here enters Anabolic Steroids, which are the Synthetic version of Testosterone. Their use makes the process of muscle growth faster and efficient.
Side Effects of Steroids
Anabolic Steroids are the most commonly used steroids in the Bodybuilding World. There use has always been a hot topic for controversy. Anabolic Steroids are synthetically prepared Testosterones which in faster and efficient muscle growth.
But these Synthetically prepared chemical have been known to have worsening effects on the human body.
Some of the commonly seen Long Term problems that appear inside the body are as follows :
Rise in Blood Pressure
This sudden spike in blood pressure results in Hypertension and imbalance in the body’s fluid level. Steroids have been connected to sudden mood swings, often termed as “Roid Rage”.
Problems of Liver
Prolonged use of steroids is known to have negative effect on liver. Jaundice and even Liver Cancer can be inevitable due to all the stress.
Reduced Natural Testosterone level
Due to the use of Synthetic Testosterones, the body adjusts to the sudden spike in testosterone level and therefore stops the natural production of the hormone. This results in decrease of libido and many other physiological and psychological problems.
Problems of heart
The use of steroids can affect glucose and cholesterol level of the body, this changes the clotting mechanism of the blood as a result makes a person prone to heart diseases.
Use of oral steroids leads to intestinal disorders, diarrhoea, vomiting, loss of appetite.
Few problems are Short term and quite easily visible from outside are:
- Frequent Muscle Cramps.
- Mood Swings.
- Acne Outburst.
- Fast Hair Growth on face and body.
- Breasts in Males.
- Male style Baldness in Females.
- Deepening of voice.
- Facial hairs in Females.
- Rashes around the area of injection.
- Alteration of Thyroid function.
- Decreasing size of testicles.
